Have you been putting off changing your HVAC air filter? The temptation can be to procrastinate just a little while longer, but a dirty air filter is actually harmful to both your home and your health. Let’s take a closer look.
The lifespan of an air filter varies based on brand, size, and workload. Generally, there will be a recommended time of use on the front of the filter’s package, which you should write down. However, if you have pets, children, or tend to overwork your system, it might not hurt to change your furnace filter more often than the package suggests.
If you still aren’t sure, a good rule of thumb for the average home is to change 2″ filters every three months, 4″ filters every six months and 5″ filters every year. This will prevent pollutants from entering your ductwork and lowering your home’s indoor air quality.
It stands to reason that if your filter is visibly dirty, it needs to be changed! Even if you don’t notice poor air quality in your home, you should check your air filter regularly to ensure no dirt is building up. If it is, change it before it begins negatively affecting your home.
A filter’s purpose is to prevent unwanted dust, dirt, particles, and pollutants from cycling through the air in your house. If your home is dirtier or dustier than usual, it could be that your air filter isn’t doing its job because it needs to be changed.
One of the side effects of poor indoor air quality is difficulty breathing. You might think you’re suffering an allergic reaction to the pollutants outside, but if your air filter is dirty, it might be the inside pollutants causing you discomfort.
Burning smells coming from your HVAC unit typically point to a dirty furnace filter. Don’t ignore the warnings of your nose. Investigate!
