Thermostat Not Working? Here are Some Troubleshooting Tips

thermostat-not-working-troubleshooting-tipsWhen your heating or cooling goes out, the problem could be your thermostat, rather than your furnace or air conditioner. Here are some simple troubleshooting steps you can take — before you call for service — to possibly resolve the problem yourself or determine if you need a new thermostat.

Issue #1: There is No Heat

Solution:

  • Check to make sure the thermostat’s switch is set to “Heat.” (Switches can inadvertently be moved to the wrong setting.)
  • If you have a programmable thermostat, make sure it is programmed correctly for the temperature you prefer at the specific time of day.
  • Turn the power off and check for loose wires. Make sure all wires are securely attached.
  • Try turning off power to the furnace for a few minutes and then turn it back on.
  • Check your thermostat’s batteries.

Issue #2: There is No Cold Air

Solution:

  • Check to make sure the thermostat’s switch is set to “Cool.” (Switches can inadvertently be moved to the wrong setting.)
  • If you have a programmable thermostat, make sure it is programmed correctly for the temperature your prefer at the specific time of day.
  • Turn the power off and check for loose wires. Make sure all wires are securely attached.
  • Try turning off power to the air conditioner for a few minutes and then turn it back on.
  • Check your thermostat’s batteries.

Issue #3: “Heat,” “Cool” or “Fan” Runs Non-Stop

Solution:

  • Switch the thermostat setting to “Fan Auto.”
  • Turn off the power, then check to make sure there isn’t a short in the wiring. Also make sure that the wires for the thermostat and furnace/air conditioner aren’t touching together.
  • Check your thermostat’s batteries.

Issue #4: The Furnace or Air Conditioner Cycles Too Fast or Too Slow

Solution:

  • Make sure the thermostat isn’t near doors to the outside or in an area with full sunshine. Either of these conditions can cause the thermostat to malfunction. If that is the case, you’ll need to move the thermostat to a better location.
  • Check the manufacturer’s product manual to adjust the cycle time.

Issue #5: HVAC Units Won’t Turn On

Solution:

  • Check to make sure the thermostat is on and programmed to “Heat” or “Cool” your home.
  • Turn off the thermostat and then back on to reset the system.
