How Do Water Heaters Work?

Before we dive into how water heaters work, it’s important to understand the different types of water heaters available on the market. There are two main types: tankless and tank-style water heaters. Tank-style water heaters are the most common type and consist of a large tank that stores and heats the water. Tankless water heaters, on the other hand, heat water on-demand as it passes through a series of coils.

How Tank-style Water Heaters Work

1

The tank is filled with water, which is then heated by the heating element (gas burner or electric).

2

As the water heats up, it rises to the top of the tank.

3

When the water temperature drops below the set temperature, the heating element turns on and heats the water until it reaches the desired temperature.

How Tankless Water Heaters Work

1

Water is heated on-demand as it passes through a series of coils.

2

When you turn on the hot water tap, cold water flows through the unit and is heated by the coils.

3

The hot water then flows out of the unit and through the hot water pipes in your home.

5 Signs Your Water Heater Needs to be Repaired

Unfortunately, like any appliance, water heaters can break down and require repairs. If you are experiencing any of the following issues, give us a call today.

1. No Hot Water

If you turn on the hot water tap and nothing comes out, the problem could be a faulty heating element or a tripped circuit breaker. To fix this issue, check the circuit breaker and reset it if necessary. If that doesn’t work, you may need to replace the heating element.

2. Not Enough Hot Water

If you’re running out of hot water too quickly, the problem could be a malfunctioning thermostat or a buildup of sediment in the tank. To fix this issue, adjust the thermostat to a higher temperature or flush the tank to remove any sediment buildup.

3. Leaking Tank

If you notice water pooling around the base of your water heater, the tank may be leaking. This is a serious problem that requires immediate attention. Turn off the power and water supply to the heater, then call a professional plumber to assess the damage and recommend a course of action.

4. Strange Noises

If your water heater is making unusual noises, such as popping or cracking sounds, it could be a sign of sediment buildup or a failing heating element. To fix this issue, flush the tank to remove any sediment or replace the heating element.

5. Pilot Light Won’t Stay Lit

If the pilot light on your gas water heater won’t stay lit, the problem could be a faulty thermocouple. This small device senses the heat from the pilot light and signals the gas valve to open. If the thermocouple is malfunctioning, the gas valve won’t open and the pilot light will go out. To fix this issue, replace the thermocouple.
